WEDNESDAY OF WEEK EIGHTEEN IN ORDINARY TIME - 2020

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

By his own choice the Father made us his children
by the message of the truth,
so that we should be a sort of first-fruits of all that he created. JAMES 1:18

JEREMIAH 31:1-7

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

After terror, violence, division, and war, after devastating destruction, death and loss come peace, understanding, serenity, and wisdom. History reveals this truth time and time again. When the chaff is winnowed from the wheat the remnant that survives finally understands that it is God alone who saves.

In times of tribulation, like the present pandemic, we begin to understand what truly matters are the things that last, the things that cannot be stolen but only lost; and what is lost can be found again.

As the prophet Jeremiah says, we can find pardon in the wilderness, those who survive find their rest in You. You, the God who saves, is with us and Your love is everlasting. If we return with repentant and contrite hearts, we will be forgiven and You will restore all the graces we squandered. Joy and peace will be heaped upon us. You rebuild lives that sin has wrecked and destroyed.

Once again we will climb the mountain of the Lord with singing and dancing, we will be fruitful once more. The shepherds will tend their flock faithfully and provide rest and pasture and we will be strengthened in the strength of the Lord.

JEREMIAH 31:10-13

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Your anger lasts for a moment but your love lasts forever. We have experienced this over and over again. You know we are weak and sinful, our flesh succumbs easily to the lure of the world. Because You are fully human and fully divine, You understand our frail humanity and You forgive us over and over again.

You are our Good Shepherd and You keep faithful watch over us who belong to You and are called by Your Name. You have ransomed us with Your life and You desire that we remain Yours in time and in eternity.

Thank You for always turning our despair to hope, our mourning to dancing, our wailing to songs of joy, and our grief to laughter. Thank You for Your love that never fails and never ends.

MATTHEW 15:21-28

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Our tenderhearted God and Lord, You always meant to heal the daughter of the Canaanite woman but You wanted to show us how a different kind of prayer is prayed and always heard. It is a prayer of deep faith and conviction that even in the midst of despair is hopeful.

The woman, not a Jew, hence an outsider, shouts aloud imploring You to take pity on her and heal her daughter who is tormented by a devil. In her deep distress and sorrow for her child, she is unashamed to create a disturbance and get You to notice and answer her. You ignored her but Your disciples who were uncomfortable with her unrelenting cries pleaded with You to give her what she wanted so they could be left in peace. You responded that You were sent only to the chosen people of God, to the children of Israel.

The woman hearing Your response to the disciples approached You, knelt at Your feet, looked into Your dear face, and said, 'Lord, help me.' A simple, direct prayer of faith straight from the heart. You replied, It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ The brave mother retorted, ‘Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.’ It is then that the miracle occurs, as You respond to her prayer, ‘Woman, you have great faith. Let your wish be granted.’ And from that moment her daughter was well again.

Let us learn from this desperate mother how to prayer when everything seems hopeless and all seems lost. The prayer of faith and persistence will always be heard and answered.
