ACTS 13:13-25

My Soul's Beloved, 

In all the circumstances of our lives, we must be attuned to what the Holy Spirit within us is saying to us, but we know it is truly His voice only when we are certain that what He is saying to us does not contradict His Word in Sacred Scripture as well as the Sacred Teaching of the Magisterium. When we do, we can always be absolutely sure that it is God speaking to us and directing us. St. Paul, as well as all the Apostles, together with the early disciples, did this, and the Church continues to offer all her children this sure way to discern whether or not we are docile to the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit.

Lord, too often we do things to please ourselves or others, but not for Your glory alone. When we act in this way, our lives will be barren of good fruit. St. Paul shows us how to evangelise in different settings. Here he is speaking to Jews in the synagogue, and he proclaims the Good News of salvation by walking them through their own history of how God saved them with great signs and wonders, and leading up to You, whom God sent into the world, to the people He chose first and fulfilled every one of the promises He made to Abraham and his descendants. Yet they rejected You then, Lord, just as Christians in the past did who broke away from Your Body and who keep fragmenting to this day. 

To us who remain faithful and those to whom You continue to grant the grace to embrace the fullness of Truth after it was revealed to them by the Spirit, we thank You. We pray for all our brothers and sisters outside the Church to receive this same gift of faith and to return home. May Your prayer for unity, already answered by the Father, be visible in our time. May there soon be but one flock and one Shepherd. 

Paul and his friends went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to go back to Jerusalem. The others carried on from Perga till they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue on the sabbath and took their seats. After the lessons from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagogue sent them a message: ‘Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.’ Paul stood up, held up a hand for silence and began to speak:
‘Men of Israel, and fearers of God, listen! The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors, and made our people great when they were living as foreigners in Egypt; then by divine power he led them out, and for about forty years took care of them in the wilderness. When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel. Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years, he deposed him and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, “I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose.” To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David’s descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, “I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal.”’

Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever,
that your truth is firmly established as the heavens.

JOHN 13:16-20

My Soul's Beloved, 

Truly, Lord, 'hindsight is always 20/20 vision.' It is only after all our most painful experiences, and as we get older, looking back, we see clearly just as the Apostles did. You kept nothing secret from them but told them over and over again not just who You are but why You came into the world, and how the world would reject You, betray You, deny You, and murder You. You also told them repeatedly that death could not hold You and You would rise again on the 3rd day. Yet they did not understand, and because they could not make sense of what You were saying to them, it made no impact on them. Even the empty tomb did not jog their memory, for You told them about it, and yet they were bewildered and continued to mourn.

But they did believe, Lord, after the resurrection. They believed wholeheartedly. They carried out the mission entrusted to them, and almost all of them were martyred brutally for their fidelity in spreading the Good News to the ends of the earth. We, however, are privileged to have the whole Truth. The Church is alive. Her memory is alive.

After he had washed the feet of his disciples, Jesus said to them:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
no servant is greater than his master,
no messenger is greater than the man who sent him.
‘Now that you know this, happiness will be yours if you behave accordingly. I am not speaking about all of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must be fulfilled: Someone who shares my table rebels against me.
‘I tell you this now, before it happens,
so that when it does happen
you may believe that I am He.
I tell you most solemnly,
whoever welcomes the one I send welcomes me,
and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.’

My Soul's Beloved,

I know it is easy to say this sitting in my cool and comfortable living room, but we indeed tend to speak of those who are martyred, often in large numbers, by the enemies of Truth in our present day and age as if this were a great tragedy. Yet, Lord, I am quite certain, just like all the martyrs, You fill them with such grace that they go to their death joyfully or at least filled with peace, knowing that they will soon be with You and experience eternal joy in Your presence. What greater gift can we ever ask for or hope for than to die for You and for the Gospel? We are not born to live in this world; we are born to die to it and to receive the joy of the inheritance You won for us with You, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. We are to be one with all the saints in heaven, and as one, we will spend eternity beholding the glory of God and the beauty of God and live in love with God and with each other in perfect bliss.

The early Christians knew this. When they were persecuted in one place, they went to another carrying the great treasure, the pearl of great price, and spreading the Kingdom of God wherever they went. If they were tortured, persecuted, imprisoned, lashed, they rejoiced for they were considered worthy to suffer for Your Name.

Lord, we are living in times where the persecution of Christians is becoming the norm. Let us not shy from this truth. Let us not consider it sad and tragic when we are to suffer for the Truth; it isn't. Let us follow You sincerely, and, like the Apostles and the early Christians, go gladly to our death if required to do so. Only let us do so with courage and joyfully, with hymns of praise in our hearts and on our lips, for surely it is wonderfully true, 'that the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians.' May the lands that are soaked by the blood of Christians bear super-abundant fruit for the glory of Your Name.

Beloved, not all of us will receive the joy of actually laying down our lives as martyrs, but the greater challenge is to live out our lives moment by moment, exercising heroic virtue, crucifying our will, and embracing Yours always.

They started preaching to the Greeks, proclaiming the Lord Jesus

Those who had escaped during the persecution that happened because of Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, but they usually proclaimed the message only to Jews. Some of them, however, who came from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch where they started preaching to the Greeks, proclaiming the Good News of the Lord Jesus to them as well. The Lord helped them, and a great number believed and were converted to the Lord.
The church in Jerusalem heard about this and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. There he could see for himself that God had given grace, and this pleased him, and he urged them all to remain faithful to the Lord with heartfelt devotion; for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith. And a large number of people were won over to the Lord.
Barnabas then left for Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. As things turned out they were to live together in that church a whole year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the disciples were first called ‘Christians.’

PSALM 86(87)

O praise the Lord, all you nations!

On the holy mountain is his city
cherished by the Lord.
The Lord prefers the gates of Zion
to all Jacob’s dwellings.
Of you are told glorious things,
O city of God!

‘Babylon and Egypt I will count
among those who know me;
Philistia, Tyre, Ethiopia,
these will be her children
and Zion shall be called “Mother”
for all shall be her children.’

It is he, the Lord Most High,
who gives each his place.
In his register of peoples he writes:
‘These are her children,’
and while they dance they will sing:
‘In you all find their home.’

My Soul's Beloved,

The world is full of people who know who You are, Lord, but refuse to admit it because it would mean that they believe, and if they believe, then they must turn their lives around and take a totally different direction, which they are not willing to do. They must walk away from their pet sins, from the fleeting attractions of the world, and direct their steps to the Kingdom of God.

Beloved, all we need to know that God is real and present is to look around us. Your imprint is everywhere, beginning with ourselves and those we love. How can we miss it? Goodness, Truth, and Beauty surround us and can be seen in all Your works. Lord, sadly, many who are baptized and have walked away from the fold are too in love with concupiscence and are unable to die to self and live, truly live for You.

You set before us eternal life and eternal death, and far too many of us prefer the darkness to light. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, grant that through the power of Your Name all who are grafted to You in the Sacrament of Baptism and who have lost their way for whatever reason, are given the gift and the grace to come home and be saved. Our inheritance, O Lord, is You. Our hope is in You. You alone are the source of life and joy, You alone. Hear our prayers for those we love and bring them home, Lord. Bring them home.

It was the time when the feast of Dedication was being celebrated in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the Temple walking up and down in the Portico of Solomon. The Jews gathered round him and said, ‘How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.’ Jesus replied:
‘I have told you, but you do not believe.
The works I do in my Father’s name are my witness;
but you do not believe,
because you are no sheep of mine.
The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice;
I know them and they follow me.
I give them eternal life;
they will never be lost
and no one will ever steal them from me.
The Father who gave them to me is greater than anyone,
and no one can steal from the Father.

ISAIAH 11:1-10

My Soul's Beloved,

The Kingdom of God is already in our midst; it came to us on Your stooping low from heaven into the womb of the Virgin and into our world. You revealed to us the love of God, the wisdom of God, the power of God, and this is for all who believe in You and the One who sent You. The same Holy Spirit, which is the Spirit of Father and Son, has been given to us. We lack nothing, Beloved, to realize the Kingdom of God which has been established in our hearts, in the Church, and in the world. Sadly, we have allowed the great Deceiver and Father of Lies to distract us. We are all consumed with the trivial, the passing, the baubles that are dangled before us, and we are drawn away from the Truth that saves.

Ignorance of God and His Word keeps us from flourishing as God, our Father, intends. We have failed to raise children nourished on Your Word and on Your Body and Blood. Our parents and grandparents have been largely ignorant, and that ignorance is handed down from generation to generation. They could be excused then, Lord, we have no excuse, and neither to our children and the coming generation, for all we need to grow and thrive on our faith is available freely to us. However, we choose to use the gifts of God not for growing in the knowledge of You and Him, but in things of this perishable world that bring death.

Lord Jesus, it is not too late. It never is, for You are a God of second chances, and we never run out of another chance to begin anew. Shake us out of our lethargy, our complacency, our indifference to the things of life, and our preoccupation with the things that only bring sorrow, grief, sadness, loneliness, depression, sickness, and death. All we need to live, grow, and thrive is ours if we only desire it. Do for u,s O Lord, what we are too stupid to do for ourselves.

A shoot springs from the stock of Jesse,

a scion thrusts from his roots:
on him the spirit of the Lord rests,
a spirit of wisdom and insight,
a spirit of counsel and power,
a spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
(The fear of the Lord is his breath.)
He does not judge by appearances,
he gives no verdict on hearsay,
but judges the wretched with integrity,
and with equity gives a verdict for the poor of the land.
His word is a rod that strikes the ruthless,
his sentences bring death to the wicked.
Integrity is the loincloth round his waist,
faithfulness the belt about his hips.
The wolf lives with the lamb,
the panther lies down with the kid,
calf and lion feed together,
with a little boy to lead them.
The cow and the bear make friends,
their young lie down together.
The lion eats straw like the ox.
The infant plays over the cobra’s hole;
into the viper’s lair
the young child puts his hand.
They do no hurt, no harm,
on all my holy mountain,
for the country is filled with the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters swell the sea.
That day, the root of Jesse

LUKE 10:21-24

My Soul's Beloved, 

We, too, are filled with the same joy by the Holy Spirit that You always experienced because it is this same Spirit that You have given us. Nothing is hidden from us any longer after the Father sent You into the world to make known His unfathomable love for us who are so unworthy and undeserving of it. Yet, look at us, sad, joyless creatures, with our eyes fixed to the earth, we are unable to see the unmistakable signs of God's loving care and tenderness that are everywhere. We prefer to focus on all the negativity instead of Your promises, Your assurances, the Truth of  Your Word, Your abiding presence in us.

You were sent by the Father to make Him and His love visible and tangible to us in and through You. You, in turn, sent us the Holy Spirit, so we could begin, even now, to experience on earth the joys of heaven. Have pity on Your people, Lord, those called by Your Name, members of Your Body, that we may realize how blessed and privileged we are to be one with You, the Father and the Holy Spirit. We are called to spread the Kingdom of God; this is our mission. Grant us the grace to so live our lives that others, too, may desire and receive what we have been so graciously given by You. Thank You, Lord. 

Filled with joy by the Holy Spirit, Jesus said:
‘I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.’
Then turning to his disciples he spoke to them in private, ‘Happy the eyes that see what you see, for I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.’

ISAIAH 2:1-5

My Soul's Beloved, 

The Church is built on Mt. Zion and is the new Temple in the new Jerusalem. Every prophecy ever made by the prophets is fulfilled in You, my Lord and my God. The Church is the new Israel, and those who belong to her are the new chosen people whom God has gathered under His wings. All are invited to come to her. People of every nation, language, and culture are called to belong to her. The invitation is freely given and can be accepted or rejected. But those who do are filled with new life, a new spirit, and every good and perfect gift poured into their hearts by the Spirit of the Living God.

You, O Lord, the almighty and Living God, Son of the Father, are humble, and this is why we need to emulate this virtue always. Pride and conceit have no place in God's abode; rather, the haughty and the conceited, those who deny You, will be crushed and destroyed as Satan and those who joined him were.

Thank You, Lord, for not just showing us the way to the Kingdom of Heaven but for being the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

In the days to come
the mountain of the Temple of the Lord
shall tower above the mountains
and be lifted higher than the hills.

ROMANS 13:11-14

My Soul's Beloved,

We are incredibly foolish to believe that the things we do under the cover of night are hidden from Your sight, yet we do them anyway. The psalmist reminds us:

even the darkness is not dark to you;

the night is bright as the day,

for darkness is as light with you.

The Word of God is filled with warnings that death comes to us without warning, like a thief in the night, and many are caught off guard despite the warnings. Grant us this grace, O Lord, this Advent to take heed and prepare ourselves. Let us strip ourselves of all that is not aligned to Your will and strive with the help of the Holy Spirit and the powerful intercession of Your Holy Mother and ours, as well as all the Saints in heaven, to be holy and perfect as our heavenly Father is holy and perfect.

Help us not to grow weary of being good and doing good. Let us put off the deeds of the dark and clothe ourselves with Your light. May the light You imbue us with illuminate the lives of those we meet daily and encourage them to walk in the light as well. Thank You, Lord.

You know ‘the time’ has come: you must wake up now: our salvation is even nearer than it was when we were converted. The night is almost over, it will be daylight soon – let us give up all the things we prefer to do under cover of the dark; let us arm ourselves and appear in the light. Let us live decently as people do in the daytime: no drunken orgies, no promiscuity or licentiousness, and no wrangling or jealousy. Let your armour be the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 KINGS 5:14-17

My Soul's Beloved, 

This passage about the healing of Naaman the leper is a powerful representation of the wondrous work of grace wrought in the soul through the Sacrament of Baptism. Original sin separates us from the life of God. Cut off from the source of all life, we will slowly wither and die as does the limb diseased from the dreaded scourge of leprosy. 

Naaman the Syrian was informed about the prophet Elisha by a Jewish slave in his household, who told them of Elisha's ability to heal. Accompanied by his servant,  Naaman travelled to Israel to look for the prophet, and the prophet advised him to immerse himself seven times in the Jordan, and he would be healed. He obeyed his instructions, and we are told that his flesh became like that of a little child.

When we are immersed in the waters of Baptism, our soul is washed clean, and we become children of God and heirs to the Kingdom of heaven. Through Baptism, we receive God's free gift of faith, which enables us to walk in the Way of Truth that leads to eternal Life in You, with You, and through You. Naaman wanted to heap riches on Elisha, but he would have none of it, for the power to heal belongs to God; he could take no credit nor reward for doing God's work of mercy. Once Naaman understood this, he did right by asking to take the earth from the promised land to his native country to build an altar, since from then on, he resolved to worship no other god but the one true God. So it is with all the baptized - we who are grafted into Your Body live to love, honor, adore, and worship the Triune God and Him alone to serve always.

Naaman the leper went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, as Elisha had told him to do. And his flesh became clean once more like the flesh of a little child.

Returning to Elisha with his whole escort, he went in and stood before him. ‘Now I know’ he said ‘that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. Now, please, accept a present from your servant.’
But Elisha replied, ‘As the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will accept nothing.’ Naaman pressed him to accept, but he refused.
Then Naaman said, ‘Since your answer is “No,” allow your servant to be given as much earth as two mules may carry, because your servant will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice to any god except the Lord.’

PSALM 97(98):1-4

The Lord has shown his salvation to the nations.

Sing a new song to the Lord
for he has worked wonders.
His right hand and his holy arm
have brought salvation.

The Lord has made known his salvation;
has shown his justice to the nations.
He has remembered his truth and love
for the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
Shout to the Lord, all the earth,
ring out your joy.

The Lord has shown his salvation to the nations.

2 TIMOTHY 2:8-13

My Soul's Beloved, 

St. Paul's letter to Timothy reminds us that being Your followers comes at a price. We, too, have been warned that just as the world hated You, it was inevitable that it would hate us and persecute us as well. The world and those who belong to it hate Christians with a diabolical hatred. In Nigeria, there is a systematic genocide of Christians taking place, but the world's response is deafening silence. In every nation where Christians are a minority, they are crushed into the ground, their rights violated, they are deprived of earning a decent livelihood, and given the most menial tasks that barely hold soul and body together. Despite it all, they survive joyfully, for they have You indwelling in them, and this spiritual treasure no one can steal.

Many first-world nations with solidly Christian roots have sold their souls to the prince of this world. They now compel their people to embrace alien principles that do not, even remotely, resemble revealed truths and doctrine. The lot of the faithful remnant everywhere is the lot of all who, since the first Apostle, disciple, and earliest Christian martyrs who suffered and laid down their lives as the Master did. 

Grant us the courage to hold on to the gift of our faith, which is far more precious than rubies. Let us stand upright, unafraid and unwavering in our faith, and our reward will be the beatific vision of our Lord and our God and a share in Your eternal glory. Amen. 

Remember the Good News that I carry, ‘Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David’; it is on account of this that I have my own hardships to bear, even to being chained like a criminal – but they cannot chain up God’s news. So I bear it all for the sake of those who are chosen, so that in the end they may have the salvation that is in Christ Jesus and the eternal glory that comes with it.
Here is a saying that you can rely on:
If we have died with him, then we shall live with him.
If we hold firm, then we shall reign with him.
If we disown him, then he will disown us.
We may be unfaithful, but he is always faithful,
for he cannot disown his own self.

LUKE 17:11-19

My Soul's Beloved,

Gratitude is the hallmark of the humble soul. Nothing is so abhorrent to the human spirit as one who remains thankless in the face of goodness extended to them. The more we take blessings for granted, the harder our hearts will get, and nothing is as unattractive as those who greedily take the help offered to them as if it were their due.

Today's miracle for our reflection is about the ten lepers who cried out to You to take pity on them while You and Your disciples were on Your way to Jerusalem. St. Luke tells us that they stood some distance away from You and called out to You. From the way they cried out, it is clear that they had heard about You, knew who You were, and the powers You possessed. They called You by Your name, Jesus. They acknowledged You as Master, and they asked You to take pity on them and heal them. Your tender heart was moved the moment You heard their cry, and instantly, without any further pleading, You did as they asked. All ten were cured as they made their way to show themselves to the priests as You had instructed them to, so they could return to their homes and their families.  

Of the ten lepers who were healed, one was so overwhelmed with joy and gratitude that he turned around immediately, he threw himself at Your feet and thanked You for his restoration. He was a Samaritan; the other nine were Jews, and You pointed this out to those around You, publicly recognizing that it was the outsider, the foreigner, the alien who returned to give thanks. You said, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’ Ingratitude will be the downfall of the proud and the haughty, and on judgment day, when we stand before You the righteous judge, we will become aware of all the times we failed to give You thanks for Your manifold gifts to us and above all for the free gift of our salvation.

The leprosy of sin can only be healed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and unless we make use of this Sacrament of healing, we will perish in our sins.

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called to him, ‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’ When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they?
