FRIDAY OF WEEK EIGHTEEN IN ORDINARY TIME - 2020

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness; for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. MT 5:10

NAHUM 2:1, 3, 3:1-3, -7

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

After the terror comes peace and calm. When we separate ourselves from You there is only death and destruction but when we make You our refuge You are our safe harbor in the storm. Have pity on us Lord, just as You had pity on Your people. Every time they sinned they suffered grievously but when they repented You forgave their iniquity, cleansed them of all their sins, and restored Your favor.

We are living in difficult times, Beloved, we sinned. We abandoned the path of wisdom and righteousness and we find ourselves separated from You. But You love us too much to cut us off completely from You. In these times of the pandemic grace continues to work powerfully through Your Church. While we are unable to worship as a community and receive the Sacraments, we are still united in spirit.

It is our prayer and our earnest desire, Beloved, that we will all come to appreciate the riches of Your grace that we took for granted for too long. In the end, You will rout the Enemy, and we will come together once again to praise and worship You as one Body.

DEUTERONOMY 32:35-36, 39, 41

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Too long have we lived as if our actions had no consequences. We have strayed so far from the path of wisdom, decency, and common sense that we now find ourselves in a world that is depraved, violent, and filled with hate. It seems that we are deliberately and willfully hurling ourselves into the very pit of hell.

Disaster seems to stalk on every side and death seems close at hand. For the sake of Your remnant, Beloved, have pity, come to our help and save us. You alone have power over life and death. Give us life that we may live. Bring us back to our senses, Beloved, that we may return to You with humble and contrite hearts and be saved.

MATTHEW 16:24-28

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

You are the remedy for the ills of the whole world but those who are of the world reject You because they believe the cost of discipleship is too great.

Your invitation to follow You and all that it entails is clear but few have faith strong enough, as well as wisdom and courage to accept it. But those that do, discover that there is nothing more rewarding than forgetting self completely for Your sake and for the sake of the Gospel.

Just as You, Beloved, are a Sign of Contradiction to the world, so are those who come after You, deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow You. The history of the Church is strewn with witnesses testifying to the glory of picking up their cross daily and following You.

You remind us today that when You return with Your angels in Your Father's glory, we will each be repaid according to our conduct. While it is true that without faith it is impossible to please You, let us not forget that we will be repaid according to what we have done. Faith alone, sola fides, without good works is dead.
