MEMORIAL OF ST. DOMINIC, PRIEST - 2020

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Our  Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death
and brought life to light through the Gospel. 2TM 1:10

HABAKKUK 1:12---2:4

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

This has always been the lament of those who suffer and whose suffering seems endless - 'Why do you look on while men are treacherous, and stay silent while the evil man swallows a better man than he?' But the truth is that Your eyes are always on the just. Your strength and Your power grant the grace to endure for as long as the trial lasts. It may seem forever but eventually, all suffering ends. 'Weeping may linger for the night but joy comes in the morning.'

My Beloved, we can confidently place all our hope and trust in You. Not only are You a God of justice and righteousness, but You are also full of mercy and tender compassion. All who put their faith in You will triumph for You will give us a share in Your victory but the days of the wicked will come to an end. Like grass, they will wither, be gathered up, and burned in the furnace where the fire never goes out.

Your Word does not deceive. Every Word that issues forth from the mouth of God will fulfill all that God wills for the Word of God stands firm and endures forever.

PSALM 9:8-13

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Because we are weak we lose confidence, we become fearful when we have to live through challenging times. But if we are rooted in Your Word. If the Word of God is the lamp that lights our path, we will find the strength we need to carry us through the difficult moments in our life.

When we place our hope in You we are placing our confidence in the triune God - a God who is good, whose nature is love, a God who is our Creator and Father, a God who is our Brother, Savior and Redeemer, a God who is our Helper, Comforter, and Guide.

While it may seem that the wicked thrive and the innocent are mowed down repeatedly, the day of judgment comes for all. Every prayer, every cry, every sigh is heard. You never forsake those who put their faith, hope, and trust in You.

MATTHEW 17:14-20

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Let us never forget that every fervent faith-filled prayer prayed by a parent for their children is heard. St. Monica prayed ceaselessly and tirelessly, with great sorrow and many tears for fourteen years for the conversion of her son, St. Augustine. Our problem is we tire easily. Let us pray with renewed faith and confidence for the salvation of those we love whose souls may be in peril.

In today's Gospel, we read of a heartbroken, desperate father, pleading for healing for his mentally challenged son. His prayer of grief and helplessness finds immediate resonance with You and obtains for him his heart's desire. A man came up to Jesus and went down on his knees before him. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘take pity on my son: he is a lunatic and in a wretched state; he is always falling into the fire or into the water. I took him to your disciples and they were unable to cure him.’

The disciples failed in curing the boy because they lacked belief in their ability to do so despite receiving this power. You then turned to the father of the boy and said, 'Bring him here to me.’ You rebuked the devil and it came out of the boy and he was instantly and completed healed.

When the disciples ask You later why there were unable to cast out the evil spirit from the boy You said, 'Because you have little faith.' Very often our prayers are not heard because we do not believe that we will receive what we ask for. Too often we lack faith even as small as a mustard seed, this is why we live such lackluster, grey, boring lives. A life of faith is filled with love, grace, power, and joy that comes from living a life filled with the Holy Spirit. 'I tell you solemnly if your faith were the size of a mustard seed you could say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it would move; nothing would be impossible for you.’
