DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for revealing the mysteries of the kingdom to mere children. MT 11:25
ISAIAH 10:5-7, 13b-16
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
What You say to Assyria can be said to the strong, the powerful, the ones with money and influence, who strip the poor of the little they have with no conscience, and ride roughshod on the rights of the vast majority of people who have no recourse to impartial judges to render them true justice.
You are not asleep. The helpless do not cry out to You in vain. The poor will be vindicated for You are our holy and righteous Judge. The unscrupulous, the unrighteous, the unprincipled, and the ungodly will discover that Your wrath is an all consuming fire.
PSALM 94:5-10, 14-15
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
In these days of the pandemic we see the stark differences between how the poor are treated in comparison to the rich, the influential, and the famous. The world seems to have lost its soul.
In the psalm selected for today's liturgy we see a reflection of what we are experiencing now, in our day and age. How little the world has changed. The rights of poor widows are denied, destitute orphans are exploited, innocent people are killed. The mob is controlled by evil people who remain hidden. Every one seems to be in collusion with the devil.
It is easy to feel helpless and discouraged in times like these, but the psalmist also reminds us that You will not abandon Your people.
Can he who made the ear, not hear?
Can he who formed the eye, not see?
Will he who trains nations not punish?
Will he who teaches men, not have knowledge?
The Lord will not abandon his people
nor forsake those who are his own;
for judgement shall again be just
and all true hearts shall uphold it.
MATTHEW 11:25-27
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
How incredibly foolish it is for anyone to set themselves up against You, yet not only individuals but entire nations are governed by people who believe they can expunge You from the private and public sphere of people's lives.
The Twelve You chose from among the crowds that followed You were simple, unlearned, ordinary. You drew them into Your inner circle, to be schooled by You about the things of heaven, to establish Your Kingdom on earth, and to transform the world. These unassuming men faithfully carried out the mission entrusted to them to build Your Church. You filled them with the Holy Spirit, empowered them, and gave them authority to do all that You did and even greater things. You Church, founded on the Rock of Peter, continues to be the Light shining on the hill bringing hope to the world.
In Your prayer to Your Father You praise Him for choosing little ones and entrusting to them the wisdom of God and the treasures of the Kingdom. This treasury of wisdom is safeguarded by the Holy Spirit in its fullness in Your Church. Your little ones can come to Holy Mother Church, nestle in her bosom, and drink from her fount of wisdom. There is always hope for the ignorant, the childlike and the humble; but none for the fool, the self-righteous, the proud, and the vainglorious.
Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine. Amen.
