JEREMIAH 20:10-13
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
All those called by God through the pages of salvation history are called to suffer. Suffering is the lot of human existence ever since sin entered the world.
Jeremiah suffered greatly. His own people hounded him and sought to kill him. They hated him because he challenged them to give up their sins and repent.
Sin is the precursor to death. God sent many prophets to warn His people but it is often the lot of prophets to be rejected, persecuted, and killed. We like to cosy up to the familiar little sins that are habitual and slowly they come to have a viselike grip on us. We would rather kill the just and holy person than give them up and that's just what the world did when You came into the world to save us.
PSALM 18:2-7
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
The beauty of our faith is that God never tires of the sinner even though He hates our sins.
No matter how often we fail or how far we fall all we have to do is call out to You and You will come to our help and save us. The greater the sinner who has been forgiven the greater is the love he has for You. It is only when we are lost and found do we come to realize how faithful You are. Every repentant sinner knows that You are kind, gracious, tender, merciful, and compassionate. We know that unless we take refuge in You, shelter in Your Sacred Heart, and make our home in You we can never be safe from the wiles of our flesh, the world, and Satan.
Thank You for abiding in me and making my poor, sinful heart Your temple. With You in me and I in You, I am safe.
JOHN 10:31-42
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
Unmitigated evil is unable to accept what is good no matter how powerful its force is. Too often we are rigid and uncompromising when it comes to our pet beliefs even if they crumble under the scrutiny of truth. We are prepared to hold blindly on to our erroneous understanding of faith and revealed truth and will go to any lengths to discredit the one who witnesses to it.
The Jews blindly held on to the Law of Moses and their interpretation of it that they would rather stone You to death than keep an open mind. They refused to give You a fair judgement even though the miracles You performed clearly demonstrated divine power. They used Scripture selectively as many do to this day. Many truly well-meaning people who head the tens of thousands of the Christian denominations are prepared to vilify and condemn without ever examining the truth or desiring to search for it with a sincere and open mind. Many who encounter You make the journey only half-way. Seeking the Truth is an on-going journey and only when we embrace the fullness of Truth no matter where it leads us can we find true joy. A sincere seeker of the Truth will ultimately say as the people did, everything the Catholic Church teaches about faith and morals is true and they will come to believe as You desire all to believe.
