DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Blessed are you, holy Virgin Mary, deserving of all praise;
from you rose the Sun of Justice, Christ our God.

Micah 5:1-4a, Psalm 13:6, Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23

Micah 5:1-4a

Dear Love, Beloved of my soul,

There are always signs of God present in the world but the world prefers to remain in ignorance of Him. The world has always tried to make Him in its image and likeness and that is why it is always disappointed, disgruntled, angry, and hostile. God is nothing like us but He gave us an incomparable model of what we ought to be when He sent You His Son into the world.

The world falls flat on its face over the rich, the powerful, the ones who make the greatest show of strength but God's is so contrary - He chose Bethlehem-Ephrathan and in the words of Scripture, "too small to be among the clans of Judah."  God's choice is always unexpected. While the whole of Israel speculated how the Messiah would come into the world, while they expected Him to come with great pomp and circumstance, God chose a little Virgin girl, from an insignificant place Nazareth, a place so unworthy of notice that it caused Nathaniel to say, "What good can come from Nazareth?" This is why when God descended to make His home in the womb of Mary, it was so quiet, so silent, that no one knew of the earth-shattering and life changing event that had taken place that would change all our notions about God and who He is and how He loves.

The prophet rightly said of Him, of You Beloved,

He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock
by the strength of the LORD,
in the majestic name of the LORD, his God;
And they shall remain, for now his greatness
shall reach to the ends of the earth;
he shall be peace.

Psalm 13:6

Dear Love, Beloved Bridegroom of my soul,

Mary, Your Mother and through Your great goodness,our Mother as well, has always, filled with the Holy Spirit, understood that it was through no merit of her own that she was chosen by God as His instrument for the great work of salvation. It began with her immaculate conception in preparation for that astounding moment when through the coming upon her by the Holy Spirit and the power of God overshadowing You took flesh in her womb and became Incarnate. God from God, light from light, true God from true God - truly God and truly Man because one young girl had the courage to say yes to God even though she did not fully comprehend what He was asking of her. However, she was exultant that God in His great mercy chose her to be the Mother of His Son.  Today on the feast of her Nativity, we rejoice with her.

Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23

Dear Love, Beloved of my soul,

Today as the Church celebrates the birth of Mary, You Mother and ours, we recall Your own birth and how it came about. We read Your ancestry and we see in it a mix of the good, the bad, the ugly, the sinner, and the saint through the line of Joseph, son of David, Your foster father.

Of him Scripture says, "He was a righteous man." A man after the heart of God. A man who always put God and His will before his own. And of Mary the angel Gabriel tells Joseph,

".... do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,

which means "God is with us."

Happy Birthday Mama Mary.  Thank you for saying Yes to God and for giving us Jesus, the Son of God and Your Son.
