THURSDAY OF WEEK 9 IN ORDINARY TIME - 2024

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Our Saviour Jesus Christ abolished death
and he has proclaimed life through the Good News.2 TIM 1:10

2 TIMOTHY 2:8-15

My Soul’s Beloved,

We carry the treasure of the Good News in clay pots, our vulnerable bodies which can be destroyed but the Good News is imperishable. You, O Eternal Word of the Father that leaped into the womb of the Virgin, is the Word of Life and Truth. You have entrusted the members of Your Body not only to preach the Good News but to live it. You invite us to be a witness to the power of the Word. It brings grace, life, hope, and meaning to a joyless, suffering, dying world.

There is nothing this world can do to those who live the Gospel in spirit and truth to crush them – for the enemies of Truth can destroy the body and after that can do nothing more. If, like the Apostles, St. Paul, and all through the ages who are privileged to suffer for the faith, are granted the grace to suffer as well may we not be found wanting in courage and faith. May we meet every trial with serenity and joy.

Here is a saying that you can rely on:
If we have died with him, then we shall live with him.
If we hold firm, then we shall reign with him.
If we disown him, then he will disown us.
We may be unfaithful, but he is always faithful,
for he cannot disown his own self.

Every day O Lord is a new day to live the Gospel values faithfully. We are living witnesses to the inheritance we have received from those who have gone before us. They have followed in the Master’s footsteps and like You, O Lord, they have shown us, ‘No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’

Do all you can to present yourself in front of God as a man who has come through his trials, and a man who has no cause to be ashamed of his life’s work and has kept a straight course with the message of the truth.

PSALM 24(25):4-5,8-10,14

Lord, make me know your ways.
Lord, teach me your paths.
Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:
for you are God my saviour.

In you I hope all day long
The Lord is good and upright.
He shows the path to those who stray,
He guides the humble in the right path,
He teaches his way to the poor.

His ways are faithfulness and love
for those who keep his covenant and law.
The Lord’s friendship is for those who revere him;
to them he reveals his covenant.

Lord, make me know your ways.

MARK 12:28-34

My Soul’s Beloved,

Today’s Gospel tells us of a scribe who put this question to You: ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’

Your replied: ‘This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.

This scribe commended You for Your answer and added: ‘Well spoken, Master; what you have said is true: that he is one and there is no other. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself, this is far more important than any holocaust or sacrifice.’

Unlike the other scribes, chief priests, Pharisees, and elders whom You often called out for their hypocrisy, You commended him for his wisdom and assured him: ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’

Our lives must reflect what we believe if we are to be effective witnesses to the Truth of the Word of God. For it is power and it is life. We are hypocrites if we do not live what we believe. Our faith cannot be just words but it must direct, shape, and guide our lives.
