DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom. MT 11:25
ZECHARIAH 9:9-10
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
God's greatest friends, those most beloved by Him are the ones who are meek and gentle of heart. He despises the proud, the boastful, the haughty, but raises the lowly. We have only to look through Scripture, and examine the lives of holy men and women to recognize that the virtue of humility and of childlike simplicity is what pleases God most. When we see ourselves as we are, our vision has greater clarity in knowing You, loving You, and worshiping You.
You, the Son of God, humbled Yourself in obedience to God the Father, by coming into the world as a man and dying the death of criminal for our sake, in doing so You taught us what is means to be truly humble.
PSALM 145:1-2, 8-11, 13b-14
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
Every breath we breathe must glorify You, our Lord, our God, and our King. You are worthy of praise. You are worthy of love, You are worthy of worship and adoration. Our mouth ought never to cease speaking of the wonder of Your works. Our hearts ought to overflow with love in contemplating Your greatness. All of creation, every season, all that flowers, fruits, and flourishes does so in praise and thanksgiving of the Creator.
May I praise You with every breath I breathe. Even when I lie down to sleep at night may my spirit praise You and when I wake up each morning may my first waking thought and every thought thereafter, until I lie down again, be of You. May I live and die praising You, my Lord and my God.
ROMANS 8:9, 11-13
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans speaks about putting to death all that is unspiritual in us. But this is a lifelong process. Our weaknesses have to be rooted out slowly, painfully, deliberately, one at a time. We cannot do it on our own. But then we are not asked to do it alone. From the time we are baptized we have been filled with the Holy Spirit. Grace helps us. But we must want to be refined, we must desire to be pure and holy. Unless we cooperate with the Holy Spirit we will never be able to gain mastery over the flesh and its cravings.
You make Your home in us and once we are aware of Your Presence in the sanctuary of our hearts, we will be better able to permit You to control our will and our desires. For some, it is easier as they are more readily open to the promptings of the Spirit but for others, like me, it takes a lifetime of struggle and failure to gain victory over the senses. But it is possible. We were created for life not death. And as St. Paul says, if we live by the Spirit we can put an end to the misdeeds of the body and live.
MATTHEW 11:25-30
My Beloved, Soul of my soul,
It is important that those who follow You study, read, learn, and share the faith, but it more important to be simple, humble, and childlike. If not, we will just be noisy gongs or clashing cymbals.
In Your prayer to Your Father, You praise Him for the lowly and humble whom the Holy Spirit is better able to teach, lead, guide, and illumine. Very often our human wisdom gets in the way of grasping simple truths by faith in You. Children more readily understand the ways of God and the power of God rather than skeptical, world-weary adults. The haughty can never hope to know or to understand the ways of God.
Thank You for choosing me to be born into a Catholic home and for the gift of the Catholic faith. May I be forever grateful and may my life be a witness of thanksgiving to You for the gift of faith. Life can often be very difficult, thank You for Your open invitation to me and to the world: ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’
