JEREMIAH 18:18-20

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

If we are ignorant of the Good News of salvation then the Old Testament will just be a collection of stories of people and places that happened a long time ago. But if we are familiar with it then the spotlight shines on You revealing how everything in the Old finds its fulfillment and culmination in You.

The sojourn of the patriarchs, the sufferings and the prophecies made by the prophets resonate for they foreshadow all that the Son of Man would suffer. Your enemies would make plans to arrest You, raise false charges against You, and destroy You in the hopes that Your Name would be erased and You would be forgotten.

Echoing the words of Joseph, the dreamer, You now proclaim to the world, what was intended for evil, God intended for good.

PSALM 31:5-6, 14-16

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

This is the psalm You prayed while You were nailed to the Cross. Your whole life was a prayer to the Father for us.

Thank You, Beloved, for the passion and the agony that You endured for my sins and the sins of the world. May I never take my salvation for granted but humbly and gratefully give thanks for the price You paid to deliver me from the snares of the Enemy.

You show us how to trust God in all circumstances. We know as You knew that the Father never abandons those who are called by Your Name.

MATTHEW 20:17-28

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Nothing was hidden from You. You knew what would happen to You once You reached Jerusalem. You knew what Your enemies were plotting against You. You knew that in Jerusalem You would meet Your death. You would be tortured, scourged, buffetted, spat upon, and mocked before they nailed You in a gruesome crucifixion.

You who were sinless would become sin in order to set us free. Not only did You know but You also warned Your disciples what would happen. No one likes to dwell on suffering. We prefer to gloss over it. The Twelve were so successful in doing it that they actually forgot and fled in fear when the time You foretold had come. Most importantly, You also told them that You would be raised on the third day. Of all the things You said to them this was the most incomprehensible. So evident was it that they simply took no notice of it and forgot it that they were actually astonished and perplexed when they found the tomb empty.

Nothing You said registered with them all that consumed them was a desire to receive places of honor beside You in the Kingdom of God. We all desire the glory but none of us wants the suffering that must precede it.

Every disciple is required to drink deeply of the chalice of suffering. We have to endure a share of the passion in our own lives before we can share in Your glory.

Your word is clear:

"..... whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
