Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Reflection

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Speak, Lord, your servant is listening;
you have the words of everlasting life. 1 Sam 3:9, Jn 6:68C

1 Kings 19:16B, 19-21, Psalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-11,
Galatians 5:1, 13-18, Luke 9:51-62

1 Kings 19:16B, 19-21

My Love, Beloved of my soul,

We do not send ourselves we are always given our mission by God. Just as the Father sent You, and You sent the Holy Spirit, You also give us our mission when we are baptized into Your Body, the Church.

Elisha was chosen by God to succeed Elijah as prophet. Elisha was free to say yes or no. He chose to say yes but asked to say farewell to his parents first. One would think this was a reasonable request but it appears that this was not the right response to the call given to him by God.  When Elisha realized this he destroyed everything that tied him to his old way of life when he sacrificed his oxen and followed Elijah with an undivided heart.

This is the kind of attitude we are are to have when You call us to serve You. Everything that hinders us must be given up when we agree to go wherever You lead us. You want no part of a divided heart.

Psalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-11

My Love, Beloved of my soul,

The Psalmist says that You are his inheritance. How blessed we are to have You as our refuge. To have You as our God who loves us, protects us, and keeps us safe through all the struggles and challenges that we have to face in life.

You have given us Your Holy Spirit who abides in us and always directs us in the way we should go. He speaks to us and helps us to make the right choices. We walk with confidence as children of God when we are led by the Spirit and nothing that happens to us is beyond our ability to endure when we trust Him to help us.

As long as we obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit we can be confident that we will be led safely to the Kingdom of heaven. Thank You, Beloved, for the hope we have of eternal life with You, the Father, and the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:1, 13-18

My Love, Beloved of my soul,

You came to set us free from the slavery of sin. Anyone who sins is bound by whatever sinful pleasure the flesh craves. Sin prompts us to sacrifice all that is truly good, noble, pure, and beautiful.

You died in order to destroy forever the chains that yoked us to a life of sin that ultimately led to eternal death. You entered into our death, took upon the sins of the whole world, in order that all who believe could enter into Your Resurrection and live forever.

Love took You to the Cross and that same love teaches us to embrace our daily crosses and follow You in humility and obedience. We are called to love as You loved - with our whole being.

Thank You for the Gift of Your Holy Spirit; without Him, we would not be able to live a life of grace for we would not have the strength necessary to deny our flesh and choose life.

Thank You, Beloved, for saving us and for showing us the Way back to our Father's house.

Luke 9:51-62

My Love, Beloved of my soul,

We must always remember that we do not choose our mission, it is You who invite us. What is important is how we respond to that invitation. Often, we want to do things, good things maybe, but it is not what You want. There is no blessing in doing it what we need to have is a humble heart and an obedient spirit.

Very often we are not equipped spiritually, emotionally, or physically to do the things that others are called to do. We are called to do the more humble work. To do our little daily tasks well, joyfully and without complaining.

Some are called to give up the world and follow You but again the ties to those we love may be too strong and too painful and so we procrastinate. God wants no part of a divided heart. We give all or nothing and when we do God gives us even more than we could ever imagine. There is no more generous Giver than You, My Lord.

And then there are those who answer Your call but like Lot's wife are constantly looking back on what they have given up, perhaps they look back with nostalgia and regret. Like Lot's wife, they are immobile and are unable to fulfill the work they are called to do. This is why You say to each of us who are called to serve You in one way or another, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God."
