1 Kings 17:7-16, Psalm 4:2-5, 7-8, Matthew 5:13-16

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Let your light shine before others
That they may see your good deeds

and glorify your heavenly Father. Mt 5:16

1 Kings 17:7-16, Psalm 4:2-5, 7-8, Matthew 5:13-16

1 Kings 17:7-16

Dear Love, Beloved of my soul,

During the drought, God made provision for Elijah. A widow in Zarephath who had nothing herself would out of her poverty share the little she had with the prophet and both she and her son would, in turn, be blessed for as long as the drought lasted.

Beloved, the widow in this passage in the Old Testament is like the widow in the New who gave to the temple treasury her two little copper coins which were all she had to live on. You commented that she put in more than everyone there because the others had given of their plenty - she gave everything meager though it was. She was blessed through the years of drought and famine with food not only for herself and her son but for the prophet as well.

Here is a lesson for us as well. We must trust You always and obey Your Word. You, in turn, will bless us and provide for all our needs just as God provided for Elijah and the widow.

Psalm 4:2-5, 7-8

Dear Love, Beloved of my soul,

You always answer when we call because of Your great love for us. There is a cry that pierces the heart of God. It is a cry we make out of our poverty and desperation knowing that there is no earthly remedy for what ails us. It is then we turn to You, throw ourselves upon Your mercy, and beg You to help us and You do. You make a way where there was none. You heal and You console. You restore and You may whole once more.

We thank You Beloved for Your faithfulness and love. Thank You for forgiveness of sin. Thank You for filling our hearts with joy and for feeding us with Yourself.

Matthew 5:13-16

Dear Love, Beloved of my soul,

Today You reminded me that I was created for a purpose no matter how small it is I have a work to do. The widow of Zarephath was called to share the little flour and oil that she had to feed the prophet and when she did God ensured that both flour and oil did not run out for as long as it was needed.

In the same way Beloved You remind me today that I add flavor to the world so long as I do the will of God as ordained by Him before He laid the foundations of the world. However, if I refuse to do so, then I am good for nothing, fit only to be cast out.

You have put Your light into my heart when I was baptized. You are the Light of the World and I am a spark of that great Light. In a dark world Beloved, my little spark provides just enough light to take one step forward and perhaps help another to do so as well.  This is all that You ask of me. There are great things that are asked of others in the world. As for me, Beloved, I am Your nothing and because my capacity is practically nothing, not much is required of me except to be that grain of salt and that little spark for as long as I live. Even in my nothingness when used faithfully for Your glory I make a difference in the world and You will be glorified even if only a little through me.
