1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22A, Psalm 89-16-19, Mark 2:1-12

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

A great prophet has arisen in our midst
and God has visited his people. Lk 7:16

1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22A, Psalm 89-16-19, Mark 2:1-12

1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22A

Dear Love, Beloved of my soul,

The sins of a few has consequences on the many as we see today. Samuel's sons were not like their father and this is why the people asked for a king as neither of his sins were fit to take his place. However, in asking for a king to rule over them they were rejecting God's authority and kingship over His people. When Samuel repeated what God had said and explained clearly all the disadvantages of having a king the people still insisted that Samuel give them one. Once again Samuel approached God and repeated all that the people said, God told Samuel to give them what they asked for, a king to rule over them.

Too often we come to You and beg for what is not good for us and we refuse to listen to reason; You give us what we ask for in order that we might learn through our misfortunes that what we had desired was not in our best interests. Too often, we go after what is clearly not the wisest of choices and then we have to live with the consequences which can often be truly detrimental to our good. But God is a loving Father, and allows us to make mistakes so we can then come back to Him sadder and hopefully wiser.

Psalm 89-16-19

Dear Love, Beloved of my soul,

Our joy is in You it always was and it will always be in time and in eternity. To walk in the light of Your Presence, to choose to follow You always. To listen to Your Voice constantly and to obey promptly and joyfully, in this is true and lasting joy.

Beloved, You imbue us with Your grace and Your Presence always. Your tender gaze is always upon us. You long to gather us in Your arms as a mother hen her chicks and when we call on You in times of trouble, You hasten to help us. You are God and yet You are the most loving, most compassionate, and most merciful of fathers. Lord God may I sing Your praises in my waking and in my sleeping and You will always be with me for You dwell in the praises of Your people.

Mark 2:1-12

Dear Love, Beloved of my soul,

We can picture the scene, You are at home in Your hometown, the room is crowded people are packed inside all eager to listen to You. Yet, in that crowd not all had come with pure intentions. The scribes were there to catch You out, to question You, to embarrass You if they could. There is a commotion at the entrance some people having heard of the miracles You have performed have brought a paralytic and wish to bring him before You; but it is impossible, they cannot squeeze in because of the crowd. But they will not be deterred. They go up to the thatched roof, make an opening and lower the man down before You. What an amazing sight it would have been. You stopped teaching and everyone watched what was happening.

There is always room, there is always a way to You no matter how impossible it may seem if we truly desire to come to You as the friends of the paralytic did. You knew why they had come and wasted no time in asking them any questions but immediately forgave the man his sins. Too often our sins hold us in bondage and we become paralyzed both physically and spiritually as was the case of the man before You. To God it is of greater consequence that we set free spiritually in order that we have a right relationship with Him, ourselves, and those around us. However, the scribes were scandalized and were busy in their mind thinking unholy thoughts and condemning You. But You knew and You called them out, challenging them to answer You as to which was easier, to forgive the man his sin which had crippled him spiritually or to cure him physically which was the outward manifestation of those sins? But in order to keep them in doubt no longer, You said to the paralytic, "I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home." And to the astonishment of everyone present that is exactly what he did. He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away and everyone glorified God.

Beloved, keep me aware of the daily miracles that happen in my own life and around me and may I constantly give You glory and praise for all that You are and all that You do.
