FRIDAY OF THE 1ST WEEK OF ADVENT - 2024

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Behold, our Lord will come with power
and will enlighten the eyes of his servants.

ISAIAH 29:17-24

My Soul's Beloved,

When we measure time it seems never-ending, the more we are troubled, suffering, tormented, fearful, and anxious, the more it seems that joy and peace are only a dream. Yet O Lord, we do know that the night will end, the dawn will arrive, and the sun will rise. Winter is necessary but after the bitter cold spring will come and the earth will bud, bloom, flower, and yield fruit again. So it is for us mortals. Beloved, so long as we know You, love You, and place our whole lives confidently in Your hands, we will possess peace and joy that is beyond human understanding for our hope is in You and in Your immortal and eternal Word that gives us life, brings healing, and peace. You open our eyes and our ears and set loose our tongues so we can make You known to those who do not yet know You.

Beloved, in a world where the poor, the marginalized, the weak, and the helpless are relegated to the peripheries so they are invisible to those who get rich, fat, sleek, and complacent on their insatiable greed, and their relentless quest for power and wealth, will be utterly destroyed. Anyone who uses whatever power and influence they have to grind those who are powerless into the dust will themselves face the judgment of God and the terrible wrath of God.

It is most consoling to know Beloved, that the wicked will be destroyed and the righteous will be rewarded. The bones that have been crushed by the mighty ones of this world who have, like vultures feasted on the poor will themselves be judged by You and be cast into the eternal darkness where the worms do not die and the fire does not go out. All too often we stand by helplessly unable to do anything to right wrongs because we are powerless but You O Lord are all-powerful and we take comfort that the wicked will be destroyed and the children of God will dwell with You in peace and joy forever.

No longer shall Jacob be ashamed,
no more shall his face grow pale,
for he shall see what my hands have done in his midst,
he shall hold my name holy.
They will hallow the Holy One of Jacob,
stand in awe of the God of Israel.
Erring spirits will learn wisdom
and murmurers accept instruction.

PSALM 26(27):1,4,13-14

The Lord is my light and my help.

The Lord is my light and my help;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
before whom shall I shrink?

There is one thing I ask of the Lord,
for this I long,
to live in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life,
to savour the sweetness of the Lord,
to behold his temple.

I am sure I shall see the Lord’s goodness
in the land of the living.
Hope in him, hold firm and take heart.
Hope in the Lord!

The Lord is my light and my help.

MATTHEW 9:27-31

My Soul's Beloved,

You are the Way to the Father's house and we are like the blind the two blind men who followed You confident that if we keep close to You our eyes will be opened, our blindness will cease, and we will be given the gift of sight and along with it understanding that You are indeed the Son of David, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Messiah, the Redeemer, the Savior of the World, the Prince of Peace.

Lord grant us the expectant faith of the two blind men who follow You shouting, ‘Take pity on us, Son of David. They followed persistently keeping close to You until You reached the house and seeing that they were still with You, You asked if they believed that You could do as they asked, give them them the gift of sight. They replied, 'Yes, we do.' You responded by touching their eyes saying, ‘Your faith deserves it, so let this be done for you.’ And their sight returned. Warning them sternly to tell no one what You had done they nevertheless told everyone they met as they could not contain their excitement and gratitude at receiving the gift of sight.

Beloved, You will give us all we ask with expectant faith. Lord, increase my faith so I will hear You say to me as well, ‘Your faith deserves it, so let this be done for you.’
