MEMORIAL OF ST. GREGORY THE GREAT, POPE & DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH - 2020

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Follow me, says the Lord,
and I will make you into fishers of men.
MT 4:19

1 CORINTHIANS 3:18-23

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Too often we are so pompously thrilled with our worldly accolades, our degrees, our qualifications, all our learning we make sure that everyone knows about them. We believe they lend us stature. The more knowledge we accumulate the more we believe we have a right to spout our opinions on everything and dictate how others ought to think and act.

Today, St. Paul reminds us we must learn to be a fool before we can be considered wise before God because the wisdom of the world is folly before God. What is the folly of God? It is the Cross, it is the laying down of one's life so another may live. It is to become the least in order to be great. It is taking the lowest place so we may be raised. It is to be poor in order to be rich. To put on an apron, get down on one's knees, and serve. You came to show us a better way and it is not the way of the world and the worldly-wise.

To You belongs the world and all in it and if we belong to You, the Son of God, then we belong to God as well.

PSALM 24:1-6

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

In perfect obedience to the Father's will, You drank the Cup of Suffering to its dregs. This is why God has given You a Name that is above every other and to You, He has given the world and all in it. All is Yours and we who are in the world are Yours as well. To You is given glory, honor, power, and dominion of all that is visible and invisible.

No one can ascend the mountain of God unless we are cleansed of all iniquity for nothing impure can come into God's holy presence. You have washed us clean in Your Blood and only those who believe in You, whose hands and heart are free of guilt, whose mind, will, and spirit are conformed to You, can stand on holy ground.

We thank You, Father, for the most pleasing and acceptable Sacrifice of the Lamb without stain or blemish, whose fragrance fills the highest heavens and draws on all who believe infinite, rich, and continuous streams of blessings. All who believe are saved by the Blood of the Lamb and will be granted the eternal reward of living in God's presence.

LUKE 5:1-11

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

St. Luke describes a series of events that took place before You invited Simon to follow You. You stood on the shore as the great crowds pressed around You on every side making it difficult for them to hear You properly. Seeing two boats close by You chose to get into the one belonging to Simon and asked him to put out a little from the shore. You then sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. To this day, You are seated in the Bark of St. Peter. As the Eternal Word of God, You continue to teach the members of Your Body, the Church founded on Peter, the Rock, and so it will be until You return to claim Your Bride.

After You finished teaching You turned to Simon and said, ‘Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.’ Simon was skeptical and replied, we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.’ In obedience to Your Word, he did what You asked and was astounded for they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear, so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled the two boats to sinking point.

It does not matter what we think is possible or not, we are called to obey and do what You ask. We leave the results to You and when we do, we like Simon will always be amazed.

Simon knew immediately they had witnessed was a miracle, and falling to his knees in awe he said,  ‘Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.’ In reply, You said, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on it is men you will catch.’ To this day, the Church continues to draw men and women all over the world to faith in You. Bless abundantly all men and women who like Simon and the rest of the Apostles have left everything to follow You.
