TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - 2020

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Jesus proclaimed the Good News of the kingdom
and cured all kinds of sickness among the people. MT 4:23

ISAIAH 56:1, 6-7

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

From the beginning, God intended that people of every nation, every race, every culture, and every language come to know and worship the true God. Created by God He has left His imprint on our soul and this is why there is a hunger and a thirst in us, there is a space within us that cannot be filled with anything other than God. All who with true sincerity desire to know the Truth will find it and the gaping hole within is filled with the joy of the presence of God.

The world has never seemed more divided than in this age. Sin abounds but as St. Paul reminds us where sin abounds grace abounds even more. This is the will of God, this is the desire of God, Your priestly prayer before Your passion and death to the Father was answered from the moment You prayed it for God always hears You. There will be unity. All will come to know You, all will be on fire with love for You, and all will come together to worship You in spirit and in truth and there will indeed be but one flock and one Shepherd, our Good Shepherd.

PSALM 67:2-3, 5-6, 8

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

We long for the day when we will all speak the same language, the language of love, the language of mercy, and compassion for all. The language that the God of Love teaches us and desires us to learn and obey is taught to us by You, His only Son through the Holy Spirit working in us.

Until the dawning of that day, Beloved, may we who know You, worship You, come together to offer to the Father the one, holy, and most pleasing and acceptable Sacrifice to Him, the Sacrifice of the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world, through our faithfulness cause God to be gracious to us, bless us, and may Your Face always shed its light upon us.

You have won for the Father the salvation of the world. Whether people know it or not, all are saved by Your saving work on the Cross and by the power of Your Name. Jesus, one who saves.

We can count on God's blessings on the whole world and all its peoples for Your sake, for the sake of His only Son who was crucified for us. You took our death on Yourself so we can enter into Your life. Thank You.

ROMANS 11:13-15, 29-32

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

How wonderfully consoling it is to know that  God never takes back his gifts or revokes his choice. Because God's chosen people rejected You, we were given the opportunity to know You, love You, and receive redemption from You. By faith in You, we are saved. But the truth is that Israel and its people are chosen by God. Yes, they turned their back on You who are from the house of David and their Priest, Prophet, and King too, but their eyes will be opened at a time of Your choosing once Your Word reaches the ends of the earth. Hasten that day Lord, so You can return again in glory.

One can pity them and pray for them for they are bereft - they have no Temple, they have no place to offer the Sacrifice, without the Temple God's Presence is no longer with them. They wail and long for a past that will never return. But God has done something wonderfully new, something never heard of, the Messiah they are still waiting for came into the world. They did not recognize Him. He was one of them and they rejected Him because You did not fit their preconceived ideas of the Messiah. But the days of their stubborn disbelief will end just as ours ended and they too will believe and You will return again amid shouts of joy and trumpets blast.

MATTHEW 15:21-28

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Today's Liturgy focuses on the people who do not belong to the house of Israel, the chosen people of God. All the Readings make plain the fact that God is the God of all, both Jews and Gentiles, and all who believe in You, His Son, will be saved for there is salvation in no other name but Yours, Jesus.

How powerfully this truth is made evident in the encounter between You and the Canaanite woman, a gentile, whose daughter's was tormented by a devil. All mothers will understand her pain, her anguish, her grief at the suffering of her precious little girl who was gravely ill in her soul.

Your mission was clear, You came to reveal the Kingdom of God to His chosen people, the Jews. To this end, You chose Your disciples, taught them, prepared them, empowered them, and sent them. You restricted their ministry to the Jews alone, at first.

Now, this Canaanite woman comes along and demands that You throw a spanner in God's plan. She shouted so loudly that the disciples were a little embarrassed that You ignored her and the ruckus she caused to get You to listen to her. You refused the disciples' intercession on her behalf insisting that You were sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. The woman, however, would not take no for an answer.  She knelt at Your feet and said, 'Lord, help me.' But she persisted and in the end, her astounding faith in You obtained for her the desire of her heart. You healed her daughter. The world will continue to learn from her how to pray, how to plead, how to cry out to God without ceasing, and to receive an answer to the prayer of the broken heart.
