Saturday of Week Fifteen in Ordinary Time - 2020

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

God in Christ was reconciling the world to himself, and he has entrusted to us the news that they are reconciled. 2 COR 5:9

MICAH 2:1-5

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

There have always been 'whited sepulchers' whose evil is skillfully hidden behind a well maintained facade. They fool the world but they cannot hide from You. Every  secret wicked act they plot and carry out against the weak, the innocent, the poor, the helpless because they have the insurance of power, influence, and wealth that blind the eyes of those meting out temporal justice, is carefully noted by You.

They deny Your existence and laugh at the evil they do with impunity. But the day of reckoning comes to us all whether we believe in You or not. The mighty will fall. The proud and the haughty will be stripped of the very things they put their trust in. You, Beloved, are the champion of the widow, the orphan, the poor, and the meek will inherit the earth.

PSALM 10:1-4, 7-8, 14

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

While the first reading from the prophet Micah speaks about Your justice against the wicked, and the proud who steal the rights of widows and orphans with impunity, the psalmist echoes the prayers of distress made by those the world does not see, the marginalized, the helpless, the little ones exploited by greed and crushed by the powerful of the world.

They cry out to You in their distress, they plead with You for help. Many are too weak even to protest against the violence they suffer. You see all. You are not deaf to their cries. You have gathered every tear, You hear every sigh, You have recorded all the evil done to them and You will give them justice.

MATTHEW 12:14-21

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

The Pharisees jealously guarded their authority and their influence because they benefited immensely from the people's reliance on them. They were puffed up with pride and arrogance. They were self-righteous and contemptuous of the poor and their interpretation of the law put all the emphasis on the letter of the law with no room at all for understanding, compassion and mercy.

Then You appeared and knocked them off their pedestals and they hated You for it. You called them out publicly for their hypocrisy and errors in interpreting the law of Moses. You showed them up time and time again, You were fearless in speaking out against them undermining their authority with the people and so they began to plot Your destruction.

You went away from their reach for a while and wherever You went crowds followed You. You taught them, preached the Kingdom of God to them and cured all who came to You for healing. Quoting the prophecy of Isaiah concerning You we understand that You are God's well-beloved, chosen by Him, favored by Him and sent to us from Him. To You He entrusted the work of revealing His love to the world and to establish His Kingdom among us.

Of You the prophet says: "He will not break the crushed reed,
nor put out the smouldering wick till he has led the truth to victory: in his name the nations will put their hope." The little ones of the world find their hope and refuge in You.
