MEMORIAL OF SAINT BARNABAS, APOSTLE - 2020

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

I give you a new commandment:
love one another as I have loved you. JN 13:34

ACTS 11:21B-26; 13:1-3

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Barnabas, a contemporary of Luke the author of the Book of Acts, describes him as a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith. This is high praise. Barnabas though not one of Your chosen 12, yet called an Apostle, was formed by You and by Your teaching. He along with the others worked tirelessly to make You known to the ends of the earth. Always led by Your Holy Spirit, he accompanied Paul as his trusted companion, a faithful missionary, and a beloved friend. Finally, after preaching, teaching, and living the Gospel, he lay down his life in Your service and in the service of the Gospel.

PSALM 98:1-5

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

Through the pages of salvation history, we see that in the most tumultuous times You are ceaselessly at work drawing good from evil. We are living in one of these times now. Everywhere we look we see trouble, discord, hate, and misery. Sickness, death, and decay stalk us. Fear, anxiety, sadness, and grief seem to have made their home among us. Violence, ignorance, and murderous hate have taken over and wisdom has long since fled from public discourse. But we know that through all this You will bring about good, just as You have always done.

The psalmist gives us hope, and we have faith that You will bring victory from failure, joy from grief, and peace, and life from the very jaws of violence and death. We are redeemed, we are saved, we are adopted as the children of God. The Messiah has come into the world and has established His kingdom and His rule and You have triumphed. The head of Satan has been crushed and this he is in his death throes. This is his final hour.

While we wait for the triumphant banner of Your royal victory to unfold we will pray, and sing songs of joyful praise, and worship for You have revealed Your saving power over and over again and we will see it again in our lifetime. Alleluia! Amen.

MATTHEW 5:20-26

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

We, Your disciples, are to be as leaven in the world, and as salt and light.  We are called to be a sign of contradiction. We are called to be the beacon on the hilltop. We are called to live lives that are radically holy and perfect. Yes, we fall far, far short from the ideal but if we constantly strive, constantly set aside our will for Yours, and allow Your Holy Spirit to fill us and rule us we will overcome the world, the flesh and the devil.

You showed us the Way to the Father's house, to the Kingdom of heaven. You have taught us to be ruled by love for all. Love must be the rule of life only then can we hasten the coming of the Kingdom. This seems an impossible dream right now, Beloved, but we know that Your Word is true and we can believe in it.

We have heard the Truth, grant us the grace to allow it to direct our lives so we will all enter into the place that You have prepared for us from all eternity.
