WEDNESDAY OF HOLY WEEK

DAILY HOLY MASS READINGS

Hail to you, our King, obedient to the Father;
you were led to your crucifixion like a gentle lamb to the slaughter.

ISAIAH 50:4-9A
PSALM 69:8-10, 21-22, 31, 33-34
MATTHEW 26:14-25

ISAIAH 50:4-9A

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

You were sent into the world to reveal the love of the Father. Never was there a Man like Yourself - Wisdom incarnate, Love incarnate. You showed us how we are to live and if necessary how we are to die.

Thank You, Beloved, for showing us that the Kingdom of heaven can only be received through humility and obedience to the will of God, through love that is made visible in service, and by laying down one's life for one's friends.

No one has ever suffered the way You suffered. You were and are the eternal Victim, the Lamb without stain or blemish, whose one, holy, and perfect sacrifice has the power to take away the sins of the whole world. By Your stripes, we are healed.

PSALM 69:8-10, 21-22, 31, 33-34

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

You showed us how to bear the insults and scorn of the world. They hated You first and the world continues to hate those who model their lives on You. It is hard not to retaliate when one is shoved around, insulted, persecuted, overlooked, crushed, and marginalized because we believe in You. You desire that all who believe must shine Your Light in the world and not hide it under a bushel. You have warned us that if they hate us, if they persecute us and even kill us, we must not be alarmed for they did all this evil to You first.

Every martyr from the very beginning has gone to their death with a song of praise to God on their lips, and joy in their hearts. May we who believe be unafraid to profess our faith no matter what the consequence and if we are privileged to lay down our lives for You and for the sake of the Gospel we could ask for no better gift.

MATTHEW 26:14-25

My Beloved, Soul of my soul,

What a grubby soul was that of Judas Iscariot. He knew what the chief priests wanted and he was prepared to haggle for a suitable price to betray his only friend and the one person who truly loved him.

When You reveal that one of them will betray You the disciples were appalled, "Surely, it is not I, Lord?" They wanted to know who the betrayer was and You said, “He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.” On hearing what You said Judas had the temerity to say, "Surely, it is not I,  Rabbi?" He does not address You as Lord as the others did but calls You Rabbi, for evil, has already consumed him.

We are fast approaching the feast of the New Passover. The Tridium is almost upon us. We have not lived through such days before. We will take part in the Liturgical celebrations of these Sacred Mysteries of our faith from our homes, and yet, I believe, for many of us Catholics, it will be more moving, more faith-filled, more heartbreaking than any we have celebrated before this chastisement confined us and changed our lives in ways no one could ever imagine.

May these Sacred days transform us in ways that are lasting.
